System Shock 2 is a much more complex game than the first, which might sound terrifying to some people, considering how much of a nightmare the first game is to understand, but allow me to assure you, System Shock 2 is a thousand times easier to pick up and play compared to the first game. ![]() Your only companion are the voices in your head, whether it be the harsh virtual taunting of Shodan, or the sinister yet gentle voice of the many. ![]() System Shock 2 isn't a game that'll make you shit your pants with fear, but it will make you feel tense and alone. Walking through such sterile hallways, with only the occasional eggsack or blood spatter as decoration, it's incredible. The atmosphere is fucking unparalleled, no other game comes close. It reminds me alot of Prey, just ten times scarier. It has very strict inventory management straight out of Resident Evil, and the sort of clunky, visceral combat you would expect from those kinds of games as well. It's still definitely an immersive sim, even more so than the first game with all the new RPG mechanics, but it has all the hallmarks of a classic survival horror game, just obviously in first person. Unlike its predecessor, System Shock 2 is really a full blown survival horror game. It's very engaging to learn about this tragedy, while also gut-wrenchingly horrifying at the same time. I learned all of this from listening to audio logs and piecing it together. The plot of System Shock 2 is excellent, although it's not exactly told to you. You awaken after everyone has already died, which is eerily similar to the first game, and are tasked with exploring the derelict ship to find a way to destroy the aliens. And of course, they infect everyone on board, and turn the entire ship into a fleshy parasite-infested hell hole. It picks up a distress signal from some random planet, they check it out, excited to finally prove the existence of aliens or whatever, and surprise, it's those goddamn Shodan mutants. 42 years later, the Von Braun, the first space ship ever capable of lightspeed travel, embarks on its maiden voyage. The hacker from the first game jettisoned that Grove deep into space, and it crashlanded on some random planet. The plot of System Shock 2 is pretty in depth, so I'll try to condense it as best I can.īasically, Shodan, from the first game, created some weird alien species in one of the groves on Citadel Station. And after beating it for myself, I have to say, that title isn't far off. System Shock isn't known for being System Shock, it's known because its sequel is considered one of the greatest games ever made. I beat System Shock a couple weeks ago, and it was a blast.
